Payroll Desk Challenge

Catch the payroll red flag

Five records land on your desk minutes before the SIF goes out. Each one looks payable. Make your call on every line, hold or release, then tap to see how our payroll desk would call it.

Read each scenario, decide hold or release, then tap the button to reveal our specialists’ verdict and reasoning.

Tip: there are no wrong answers here except the ones that reach the bank. Take your time on each line.

LINE 1  A leaver from last month is back on the register at full salary, with no rehire paperwork on file.
Hold or release?  Tap to reveal ▸
HOLDA terminated record paying again is the classic duplicate or ghost-payment flag. Confirm a valid rehire and a live contract before it goes anywhere near the bank.
LINE 2  An employee was on unpaid leave for 12 days, but the register shows a full month’s pay and no NOPAY code.
Hold or release?  Tap to reveal ▸
HOLDFull pay with no unpaid-leave code almost always means the absence was never fed into the run. Left alone, it is an overpayment you will be clawing back next month.
LINE 3  Cash is tight. Finance proposes transferring 84% of total wages on time and the rest a few days later.
Hold or release?  Tap to reveal ▸
HOLDUnder the current UAE WPS rules an establishment is treated as compliant only if at least 85% of total wages due are paid on time. At 84% you are on the wrong side of the line before a single day is late.
LINE 4  A warehouse team’s overtime is up 40% on last month. The hours are approved, coded correctly, and match the timesheets.
Hold or release?  Tap to reveal ▸
RELEASEA variance is not an error. If it is approved, documented and coded correctly, it is payable. You would only hold this one if the approval or the coding were missing.
LINE 5  A new joiner with a mid-month start date appears on the register at a full month’s salary, not pro-rated.
Hold or release?  Tap to reveal ▸
HOLDA mid-month joiner paid a full month is an overpayment unless the contract genuinely starts on the 1st. Confirm the start date and the pro-rata before release.
